Bruisers 2D Boxing by FunOldGames and Halfbrick Studios is built natively around controller inputs. The game currently requires a gamepad to play, featuring multiple preset control layouts such as the Bruiser and Classic schemes. Keyboard and mouse inputs are not yet supported in the playable demo, making a controller mandatory to enter the ring.

Controller Presets and Setup

Bruisers 2D Boxing features full controller support on PC, including native compatibility with Xbox pads and DualShock controllers. While the game provides multiple controller layouts, fully customized button remapping is not yet available in the demo settings.

Custom Button RebindingUnavailablePlayers can switch between presets, but cannot individually rebind keys

If you enter Quick Play and find both boxers fighting automatically without responding to your controller, check your pre-fight selection. The match setup uses an old-school two-player select screen. You must push your stick left or right to take control of the fighter on your chosen side before starting the bout.

Bruiser vs. Classic Layouts

The game offers different control schemes to handle its punch repertoire. Switching the controller scheme to Classic alters how jabs, straights, hooks, and uppercuts are commanded, giving players who struggle with hook-only inputs a more traditional boxing layout.

In-Ring Combat Moves and Archetype Inputs

Ring gameplay goes beyond basic arcade brawling, requiring players to manage distance, dynamic stamina, and defensive pacing.

Punch Selection

The moveset includes standard offensive strikes:

  • Jabs
  • Straights
  • Hooks
  • Uppercuts
  • Overhands

Landing body shots actively drains your opponent's stamina, opening windows for heavier head strikes once their guard drops.

Defensive Mechanics and In-Fighting

Bruisers 2D Boxing utilizes technical boxing tools to counter aggressive opponents:

  • Head Movement and Slipping: Evade incoming punches without moving your feet to preserve ring position.
  • Parrying and Counters: Time incoming strikes to create instant counter-punching openings.
  • Clinch Work: Tie up aggressive fighters inside to stop combinations, throw short punches in the clinch, and wait for referee intervention.
  • Stance Transition: Your boxer automatically shifts into an in-fighting stance when closing distance, altering strike delivery at close range.

Archetype-Specific Abilities

A major demo update introduced unique mechanical tools tied directly to boxing styles:

  • Bully Archetype: Accesses the heavy-hitting Haymaker punch to break through guards and punish opponents on the ropes.
  • Slick and Balanced Archetypes: Gain the Side-Step evasion maneuver, allowing fighters to circle off the centerline and slip out of corners.

The Wipe Blood Mechanic

During fights where your boxer takes heavy facial damage, a visual blood overlay can obstruct your vision and increase the danger of a doctor stoppage. You can actively clear this by using the "wipe blood" input prompt (indicated on-screen during exchanges, often tied to a quick directional tap) to wipe away blood between or during exchanges.

Keyboard and Mouse Support Status

Keyboard controls do not function in the Bruisers 2D Boxing demo. The development team has confirmed on the Steam forums that the game was designed specifically for gamepads, and resources were concentrated on refining controller handling first.

While the developers plan to introduce proper keyboard support at a later point in development, there is currently no native way to map keyboard strokes to fighter movements or punches in the boxing ring. The only place keyboard inputs appear is the skipping rope minigame on the official website, which uses arrow keys and Space.

PlayStation Controller Prompt Fix

Bruisers 2D Boxing supports PlayStation controllers through Steam, but the game currently displays Xbox button prompts (A, B, X, Y) on-screen by default. Players who do not want to translate Xbox prompts on the fly can use a community-created xdelta patch (PlaystationIcons.xdelta) shared on the Steam community forums. Applying this patch to the game's data.win file replaces the interface art with native PlayStation glyphs.

Bruisers 2D Boxing Controls FAQ

Can you play Bruisers 2D Boxing with a keyboard?

No. The Steam demo does not register keyboard inputs during matches. You must connect a supported controller to play. The developer has confirmed that keyboard support will be worked on later.

Why does the match fight itself without my inputs?

You likely skipped assigning your pad on the pre-match screen. In Quick Play, move your controller's directional stick left or right to manually pick which corner you want to control before advancing to the ring.

Does the game have an interactive training tutorial?

The demo includes a basic control overview screen rather than an interactive sparring tutorial. However, developer previews shared in the official Discord confirm that a dedicated tutorial mode is planned for the Early Access release.
